Do you know what doubling down is? If you have never played Blackjack, here’s a quick description of the rules. The object of the game is to beat the dealer by coming as close to 21 as possible without going over (busting). The cards in your hand determine scores. Number cards are face value, face cards are worth 10 points each, and the aces are worth one or eleven. Each player, including the dealer, receives two cards at the start of the game. One of the dealer’s cards remains face down. Players play out their hands first by choosing moves they want to make: hit, stand, split, or double down. Hit means to take another card, stand means to keep the cards you have, a split can be called when you have a pair (each card forms a new hand). Doubling down means to double your original bet after the initial deal, and take just one more card for the hand.

How can you take advantage of doubling down? First, you must understand the house rules on doubling down for the particular casino or online casino at which you are playing. Many casinos will allow you to double down on any hand (DOA: Double On All). Some allow you to double down after a split (DAS: Double After Split). Both DOA and DAS are favorable doubling down rules for players.

There are certain times when doubling down is a better idea. For example, you should always double down when your initial deal totals ten or eleven, and the dealer’s up card is a 4, 5 or 6. Doubling down is a good idea here because it is likely that you will make 21 with another card, or the dealer will bust. Another scenario where doubling down is advantageous is when you receive an ace and any other card, and the dealer’s up card is a 3, 4, 5 or 6. Conversely, you should never double down when the dealer’s up card is a 10 or ace, because the odds are good that the dealer will have 21. Whatever your strategy is for doubling down, it is important to have one. It’s also important not to hesitate and decide not to double down when you should. Doubling down will make you more money than any other Blackjack strategy; so take advantage of this opportunity and know when to double down!
